What it means

These markets typically require cryptocurrency deposits into a market-operated wallet before a purchase, and payouts to vendors from the same pooled infrastructure, which makes their deposit and payout addresses identifiable and trackable over time by researchers and law enforcement, even while the market itself operates anonymously.

Darknet markets have a documented history of sudden shutdowns, whether through law-enforcement takedown or an "exit scam" where operators simply disappear with pooled user funds. Both outcomes leave a wallet's transaction history permanently linked to the market, which is why exposure remains a durable risk signal long after any individual market ceases to operate.

Real-world example

The Hydra darknet market, once the largest in the world with billions of dollars in lifetime volume, was shut down in a joint German and U.S. law-enforcement operation in 2022, but wallets that transacted with its known addresses still carry that exposure in on-chain history today.
