What makes the pattern worth flagging is dormancy combined with the wallet's known history: a wallet that received stolen funds years ago and then went silent can plausibly wait out public attention before attempting to launder those funds.
Timing correlation adds further signal — a wallet reactivating shortly after a related enforcement action fades from headlines, or shortly after a mixer's sanctions designation is announced (attempting to move funds before the designation fully takes effect on exchanges), both fit a pattern investigators watch for specifically.
Real-world example
Wallets holding proceeds from early exchange hacks have occasionally reactivated years later, in some cases prompting renewed law-enforcement interest and, in a few well-documented cases, leading directly to an arrest once the reactivation created a fresh, traceable transaction.
