Travel Rule

The Travel Rule is a regulatory requirement, originating from the Financial Action Task Force, that virtual asset service providers share originator and beneficiary information — names, and often account numbers or wallet addresses — with each other when transferring funds above a set threshold on a customer's behalf.

What it means

The rule's name comes from its traditional banking origin, where payment information had to "travel" with a wire transfer between financial institutions. FATF's 2019 guidance extended the same principle to crypto, requiring exchanges and other VASPs to transmit sender and receiver identity information alongside a transaction, rather than letting funds move with only wallet addresses attached.

Implementation has been genuinely difficult industry-wide, because it requires interoperable technical standards between VASPs that may operate in different jurisdictions, use different compliance vendors, and were not originally built to exchange this kind of data with counterparties in real time — a persistent friction point in global crypto compliance even years after the rule was introduced.

Real-world example

When a customer withdraws crypto from one Travel-Rule-compliant exchange to deposit at another, the sending exchange is expected to transmit the customer's name and account details to the receiving exchange alongside the transaction, mirroring how a bank wire carries sender information today.
